The Delhi High Court has granted interim protection to actor Varun Dhawan in a case concerning the misuse of his name, image, and personality attributes, particularly through AI-generated deepfake content and unauthorised commercial exploitation. The court’s order was issued on May 29 by Justice Jyoti Singh after the actor approached the court seeking enforcement of his publicity and personality rights.
The court observed that Dhawan had established a prima facie case for interim relief and directed several websites, social media intermediaries, and e-commerce platforms to refrain from circulating or hosting any objectionable content involving the actor. This includes AI-generated deepfakes and manipulated images portraying him in inappropriate or misleading scenarios that could harm his reputation.
The bench noted that such content, particularly pornographic or misleading AI-generated material, could mislead the public into believing it to be real and could cause serious reputational damage. It emphasized that the actor’s right to protect his identity and prevent unauthorized commercial use of his personality must be safeguarded under law.

As part of the order, the court also directed major digital platforms, including Google, Meta Platforms, and X Corporation, to provide Basic Subscriber Information (BSI) of users responsible for uploading or sharing infringing material. Additionally, intermediaries have been instructed to remove any newly identified infringing content within 36 hours of being notified by the actor or his representatives.
During the hearing, the court was informed that several online sellers and booking agencies were allegedly misusing Dhawan’s name and likeness to promote merchandise and falsely claim association with him for events and endorsements. The actor also highlighted concerns over AI-generated explicit content involving him and co-stars, stating that such material is damaging and deceptive.
Dhawan has further argued in his petition that his name and signature are registered trademarks, and any unauthorized use constitutes infringement of his legal and commercial rights. The case adds to a growing number of legal disputes in India involving celebrity personality rights and the misuse of artificial intelligence to create deepfake content.
