India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inspected a rugged, indigenously developed tactical all-terrain vehicle (ATV) based on the Mahindra Thar platform during the Raksha Triveni Sangam event, a major defence technology showcase held in Prayagraj. The three-day symposium, jointly organised by the Indian Army’s Northern and Central Commands along with the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers, concluded on May 6, 2026.
The ATV, developed by Mahindra Defence Systems in collaboration with Bengaluru-based Prad 4x4, is a heavily modified version of the Thar Roxx SUV designed for combat and high-mobility field operations. The vehicle drew attention at the event after earlier being showcased by Anand Mahindra, who described it as a machine built with “focused capability” and minimal non-essential features.
Mechanically, the ATV retains the 2.2-litre diesel engine from the standard Thar Roxx, producing 172 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. However, its structure has been extensively reworked for tactical use, with the removal of the conventional cabin and roof, replaced by a reinforced roll cage. It also features heavy-duty metal bumpers, tow shackles, and steel wheels fitted with rugged off-road tyres.

The vehicle is equipped with a range of mission-ready enhancements, including a mounted gun platform, underbody armour, blackout lighting, a front-mounted winch, jerry-can holders, and a dual spare tyre carrier at the rear. According to the developers, the ATV is also designed to be airdrop-capable, expanding its deployment versatility for armed forces in remote or hostile terrains.
The Raksha Triveni Sangam symposium brought together more than 284 companies, including MSMEs, startups, and private defence firms, to showcase innovations tailored for the Indian Army. The event underscored India’s growing push toward self-reliant defence manufacturing by fostering collaboration between the military, industry stakeholders, and technology innovators.
