Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday, October 9, said that a nation's true strength lies not only in possessing advanced weapons but also in maintaining propriety, tolerance and a strong sense of national consciousness. Speaking at an event at Rashtra Mandir Vishwa Ramayan Ashram in Delhi during the ongoing Pitru Paksha period, Singh stressed that military capabilities alone cannot define a country's overall strength. He emphasised the importance of combining technological progress with ethical values and a commitment to the nation's cultural roots.
Addressing the gathering, Singh highlighted the importance of balancing defence preparedness with moral responsibility. He observed that possessing missiles and developing artificial intelligence would remain insufficient without a strong sense of national consciousness. According to the minister, India's distinctive strength comes from combining scientific and technological advancement with values that guide society. His remarks underscored the need to ensure that the country's growing capabilities are accompanied by a commitment to responsible conduct.
The minister also spoke about the importance of remembering ancestors and honouring those who had sacrificed their lives for the country. He said that nations remain strong when their people stay connected to their roots and recognise the contributions of earlier generations. Singh noted that great individuals dedicate their lives to society, share the joys and difficulties of others, and work towards the collective good. He encouraged people to draw inspiration from such examples while contributing to the country's progress.

Singh further stressed the importance of maintaining purity of thought and conduct amid divisive and polarising public discourse. He argued that a nation's greatness should not be measured solely by its power or capabilities, but also by its tolerance, generosity and willingness to include others. The minister's remarks highlighted the role of individual responsibility and social harmony in strengthening national unity. He also linked these values to the broader idea of building a society that respects its heritage while continuing to develop.
Highlighting India's progress in science and technology, Singh said the government was also working to preserve and promote the country's cultural and civilisational heritage. He maintained that modern development and traditional values could advance together, contributing to India's national identity. His comments reflected the government's emphasis on combining technological development with cultural preservation as the country expands its capabilities across various sectors.
The Defence Minister also extended greetings to soldiers, veterans and their families on the occasion of the Territorial Army's Raising Day. He recognised the organisation's contributions to border security, disaster relief and nation-building, praising its tradition of courage, dedication and service. Singh acknowledged the role of Territorial Army personnel in supporting national security and assisting communities during emergencies.
