Jaipur’s Jawahar Lal Nehru (JLN) Road turned into a battleground of dissent on Friday as furious students from the University of Rajasthan took to the streets, demanding the reinstatement of student union elections. The fiery protest, ignited at the university’s main gate, saw dozens of students attempt to block one of the city’s busiest roads, bringing traffic to a standstill and sending shockwaves through the capital.
The students, chanting for their democratic rights, are up in arms over the suspension of student union elections, which have been on hold since 2022 due to the state’s assembly election preparations in 2023. With no polls held since, their frustration boiled over into a bold act of defiance. Police swooped in to restore order, detaining around 20 protesters and dispersing the rest, allowing traffic to resume.
“We’re fighting for our voice!” said one student protester, echoing the group’s demand for the immediate restoration of campus elections. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has also backed the students, slamming the BJP government for delaying the polls. “Rajasthan’s youth deserve their democratic rights,” he posted on X, fueling the controversy.

The protests highlight a growing unrest among Rajasthan’s students, who see student union elections as a vital platform for leadership and change. With tensions rising, all eyes are on the state government to see if they’ll heed the calls or face more road-blocking rebellions. Will Jaipur’s students get their elections back, or is this just the start of a larger showdown.
