The Ministry of Railways is set to launch a dedicated digital portal that will enable nearly 12 lakh railway employees, from senior officials to ground-level staff, to share innovative ideas for improving passenger safety, security, and service quality. The initiative aims to remove hierarchical barriers and encourage a culture of innovation across Indian Railways by allowing employees to submit ideas freely, with the option of remaining anonymous.
At present, railway staff must approach senior officials directly to present new ideas, a process that often discourages participation. The proposed portal is expected to address this challenge by providing a structured and accessible platform for idea submission. All suggestions will be reviewed by senior officials, and viable proposals will be approved for refinement, development, and large-scale implementation to benefit passengers and railway operations alike.
Railway officials highlighted several employee-led innovations already adopted within the system. These include data-driven crew training models that reduced locomotive failures and stalling cases, real-time monitoring systems for Vande Bharat trains that improved reliability, and cost-saving mechanical tools that enhanced wagon availability. Such examples underline the untapped potential of grassroots innovation within the workforce.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the new portal will empower creative thinkers and help Indian Railways achieve new milestones in safety and operational reliability. Inviting ideas from employees, he emphasized that every submission will be taken seriously and reviewed for possible incorporation into reforms. The minister stressed the importance of a consultative and participative approach to transforming railway services.
Beyond the innovation portal, Indian Railways plans to deepen engagement with startups and technology innovators to scale successful ideas across the network. The government has also undertaken massive capacity expansion, laying nearly 35,000 km of new tracks and significantly boosting locomotive and wagon production, positioning India as a global railway manufacturing hub.
Railway safety and passenger services remain key priorities, with serious accidents already reduced by nearly 90 per cent. The next target is to cut accidents by 95 per cent and bring them into single digits through advanced technologies such as the Kavach safety system, enhanced staff training, and infrastructure upgrades. Parallel efforts are underway to improve cleanliness, onboard services, station redevelopment, and the overall passenger experience across the country.
