The Ministry of Railways has approved the Arakkonam–Chengalpattu railway doubling project in Tamil Nadu, marking a major infrastructure push aimed at strengthening the Chennai suburban rail network. The 68-km project, sanctioned at a cost of Rs 993 crore, is expected to significantly improve rail connectivity, reduce congestion, and enhance both passenger and freight movement across one of South India’s busiest corridors.
According to the government, the section forms a crucial part of the Chennai suburban circular rail system, linking key routes such as Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu and Arakkonam. The approval comes as part of efforts to address rising traffic demand on the existing network, which is currently operating at high capacity levels and is expected to witness further growth in the coming years.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project will play a key role in easing congestion on the Chennai suburban system. He noted that the expansion will improve punctuality, reduce delays, and enhance operational efficiency across both passenger and freight services on the route.

Officials stated that the doubling of the line will also strengthen freight transportation, benefiting the movement of essential commodities such as cement, automobiles, food grains, iron and steel. The corridor passes through several major industrial hubs, including Mahindra World City, Sriperumbudur, Oragadam and Irungattukottai, making it strategically important for manufacturing and logistics activity in the region.
The proposed infrastructure upgrade is also expected to support future development projects in the region, including the planned Parandur airport near Kancheepuram. Authorities said the improved rail connectivity will help integrate industrial zones more efficiently with transport networks, supporting economic growth and regional development.
The Railways added that the project will modernise key infrastructure, increase line capacity and ensure smoother operations on a heavily used suburban and freight corridor. Once completed, the Arakkonam–Chengalpattu doubling is expected to provide faster, more reliable and higher-frequency train services for commuters while supporting long-term industrial expansion in the Chennai region.
