Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has sharply criticised the proposed Great Nicobar Island development project, calling it a “gravest crime against nature and tribal heritage,” intensifying the political debate over the large-scale infrastructure plan in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Gandhi raised concerns over the environmental and social impact of the project, arguing that it could severely damage fragile ecosystems and threaten the cultural survival of indigenous communities living in the region. He said the development model prioritises strategic and commercial interests over ecological sustainability and tribal rights.
The proposed Great Nicobar project involves the development of a transshipment port, an international airport, township infrastructure, and a power plant. The initiative has been positioned by the government as a strategic and economic boost, aimed at enhancing India’s maritime connectivity and regional influence in the Indo-Pacific.

However, environmental groups and activists have raised objections, citing potential deforestation, disruption of coastal biodiversity, and risks to protected tribal reserves. Concerns have also been expressed about the possible displacement or indirect impact on indigenous communities, including the Shompen and Nicobarese tribes.
Government agencies have previously defended the project, stating that environmental clearances are being obtained in compliance with legal frameworks and that mitigation measures are being incorporated to minimise ecological damage. Officials argue that the development is crucial for national infrastructure and strategic requirements.
The issue has now become a focal point of political contention, with opposition leaders calling for a reassessment of the project’s environmental costs. As debates continue, the Great Nicobar initiative remains under close public and policy scrutiny, balancing development ambitions with ecological and cultural preservation concerns.
