Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday announced that over 61,000 government jobs have been created in the past four years, reflecting his administration’s commitment to merit, transparency, and fair recruitment. The announcement came during a ceremony where Mann handed appointment letters to 606 new recruits of the state education department.
The new appointees include 385 special educator teachers, 157 primary teachers, eight principals, and 56 employees recruited on compassionate grounds. Mann emphasized that all appointments were made purely on merit and transparency, with none challenged in court, signaling a departure from past practices of favoritism and nepotism.
“Earlier, youth waited endlessly for appointment letters, scanning newspapers and postboxes. Today, deserving candidates are appointed based solely on their capability,” Mann said. He highlighted that the new system ensures opportunities for young people across villages, towns, and cities of Punjab, rather than being confined to politically connected families.

In a significant reform for education, a separate cadre of special educator teachers has been created to cater to the state’s 48,000 children with special needs. Mann underscored that these appointments aim to provide quality education and skill development at both primary and secondary levels.
The Chief Minister also highlighted government initiatives to improve overall education standards. Teachers are receiving training at global institutions, including Singapore, IIM Ahmedabad, and Turku University in Finland. Plans for 118 “Schools of Eminence,” free uniforms, and free bus services for girls further demonstrate a focus on inclusive and quality education.
Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains added that government schools now ensure proper seating for all students, a marked improvement from 2022 when nearly four lakh students had to sit on the ground. He also noted that free bus services are currently benefiting nearly 10,000 schoolgirls daily, reflecting the state government’s sustained investment in education and youth welfare.
