President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday highlighted the transformative power of education for tribal and regional development while addressing the inter-state socio-cultural gathering ‘Kartik Jatra’ at Raidih block in Gumla, Jharkhand. She urged tribal communities, especially the youth, to stay connected to their traditions while adopting modern education, science, and technology for holistic progress.
Paying homage to eminent tribal leader Pankhraj Saheb Kartik Oraon, the President described him as an inspiration who devoted his life to his people despite receiving education abroad. She noted that his vision of establishing a university in Gumla is on the path to realization, reinforcing the importance of education as a tool for social change.
President Murmu also highlighted the rich natural and cultural heritage of the region connecting Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, which boasts rivers, forests, plateaus, and mountains while preserving some of India’s oldest traditions. She termed her visit a pilgrimage, acknowledging Gumla as the birthplace of Lord Birsa Munda and other notable tribal leaders.

Recalling prominent figures like social reformer Jatra Tana Bhagat and Param Vir Chakra awardee Shaheed Albert Ekka, the President emphasized their contributions to social justice, freedom, and national pride. She lauded the tribal community’s vibrant arts, music, dance, and drama, noting that over 100 tribal artists have been honored with the Padma Shri.
The event featured colorful performances by tribal dance troupes from across India, drawing a large audience at Pankhraj Saheb Kartik Oraon Chowk Barrier Bagicha in Manjhatoli, Gumla. Present at the event were Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai, Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram, Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar, and other dignitaries.
President Murmu concluded by stressing that balancing tradition with modern knowledge is essential for regional development. She reiterated that education is the most powerful instrument for social transformation and called on tribal youth to lead the way in shaping a progressive and culturally rooted society.
