President Droupadi Murmu will make history as the first Indian head of state to reach Sabarimala’s Sannidhanam by vehicle, traveling via Swami Ayyappan Road in a specially equipped Force Gurkha four-wheel-drive vehicle. This decision, driven by health and security considerations due to the challenging hilly terrain, marks a departure from past presidential visits, such as that of V.V. Giri in 1973, who utilized the dolly service introduced specifically for his pilgrimage.
The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) and police have ramped up preparations to ensure a seamless visit while maintaining regular pilgrim access. TDB President P.S. Prasanth confirmed that arrangements at Nilakkal, Pampa, and Sannidhanam are complete, with darshan continuing uninterrupted through October 21 and during the President’s visit, despite stringent Special Protection Group protocols. Barricades and safety ropes have been installed along the route, and unauthorized persons will be cleared from Sannidhanam to comply with security measures.
President Murmu, on a four-day visit to Kerala, will arrive at Thiruvananthapuram airport on October 21 evening. On Wednesday, she will fly by helicopter to Nilakkal by 10:20 a.m., proceed by road to Pampa, and then travel to Sannidhanam in a convoy of five four-wheel-drive vehicles accompanied by an ambulance. Her darshan at the Lord Ayyappa temple is scheduled between 11:55 a.m. and 12:25 p.m., followed by her return to Thiruvananthapuram by evening. The visit adheres to traditional temple protocols for dignitaries, including carrying Irumudikkettu, wearing black attire, and possibly taking a holy dip in the Pampa River.

Security has been significantly enhanced, with a recent trial run of the convoy’s movement along Swami Ayyappan Road. Final rehearsals at Nilakkal, Pampa, and Sannidhanam will ensure precision during the high-profile visit. This historic journey underscores President Murmu’s commitment to spiritual traditions while navigating the logistical complexities of her role, setting a new precedent for presidential pilgrimages to Sabarimala.
