President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday called for active public participation in energy conservation, stressing that sustainable energy use is essential for securing a clean and prosperous future. Speaking at an event marking National Energy Conservation Day in New Delhi, she urged citizens to adopt energy efficiency as a daily habit and contribute to protecting the planet for future generations.
Highlighting the role of citizens, the President said India’s energy transition cannot succeed without the involvement of every sector of society. She emphasised that behavioural change is as important as technological innovation and called for greater engagement of children and youth in building a sustainable and environmentally responsible future.
President Murmu praised the Centre’s efforts in clean energy and energy efficiency, noting that India has already met its clean energy commitments ahead of schedule. She described this achievement as a major milestone in the country’s journey toward decarbonisation and enhanced energy efficiency, strengthening India’s leadership in global climate action.

Citing government data, she said energy efficiency measures during 2023–24 helped save 53.60 million tonnes of oil equivalent energy, leading to significant economic benefits and reduced carbon dioxide emissions. She said such achievements demonstrate how policy-driven conservation efforts can deliver both environmental and financial gains.
The President also underlined the importance of clean and affordable energy in empowering communities. She said green energy boosts local economies, creates opportunities, and drives inclusive development, adding that renewable energy is not limited to power generation but is a catalyst for social and economic progress.
Referring to the National Green Hydrogen Mission, President Murmu said green hydrogen has become a key pillar of India’s energy transition strategy. She noted that producing hydrogen using renewable energy will help reduce dependence on fossil fuels and position India as a global clean energy hub, reinforcing the country’s commitment to sustainable development and net-zero goals.
