The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has asked MahaMetro to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for a proposed metro corridor connecting Wakad to Shewalewadi via Katraj, a move aimed at strengthening public transport connectivity across rapidly growing parts of the city. The request comes amid increasing demand from elected representatives and residents for expanded metro services to address traffic congestion and improve mobility in Pune’s expanding urban landscape.
In a letter addressed to MahaMetro, PMC Chief Engineer Dinkar Gojare said the feasibility of the proposed metro corridor should first be examined within the framework of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) prepared for the city. The CMP, which outlines long-term transportation strategies for Pune, is prepared by MahaMetro, the agency responsible for developing and operating the Pune Metro system. Officials said the plan must be reviewed to determine whether the new route can be integrated into the city’s broader transport network.
“If the Wakad to Shewalewadi via Katraj metro corridor is feasible in CMP then it is suggested to proceed with planning site visits so as to facilitate preparation of the DPR for the proposed route,” Gojare said in the letter. The proposed corridor could also be extended further to Khadakwasla, depending on the outcome of feasibility studies and technical assessments carried out by MahaMetro engineers and planners.

The proposal follows recent demands from elected representatives who had earlier urged authorities to prepare a DPR for a metro line connecting Hinjewadi and Khadakwasla. The suggested extension from Wakad through Katraj to Shewalewadi is expected to complement these plans and provide better transport connectivity between western and southern parts of Pune, which have witnessed rapid residential and commercial growth in recent years.
Urban transport experts say the corridor could play a significant role in easing traffic pressure on key road networks, particularly in areas such as Wakad, Katraj and nearby suburbs that face heavy vehicular movement during peak hours. Improved metro connectivity is also expected to benefit commuters working in the IT hubs around Hinjewadi as well as residents travelling to central Pune and adjoining regions.
Meanwhile, Metro Line 3 connecting Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar, which passes through Wakad, is expected to begin operations from April. Authorities believe the launch of this corridor will significantly reduce travel time for thousands of daily commuters and could serve as a catalyst for further metro expansions across the Pune metropolitan region.
