The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has crossed a major milestone with more than 50 lakh households benefiting from rooftop solar installations, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The government said the scheme has reached 50.06 lakh beneficiary households, marking a significant increase in rooftop solar adoption since its launch in February 2024. The programme aims to provide affordable clean energy access to one crore households by March 2027.
Launched with a financial outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, the scheme has accelerated rooftop solar deployment across the country. The government highlighted that the programme has added one lakh beneficiary households every six days, with installation activity increasing more than threefold over the past nine months. Officials said the current pace represents a major expansion compared with the previous decade, during which only 7.94 lakh rooftop solar installations were recorded.
Under the scheme, households receive financial assistance of up to 40 per cent of the installation cost of rooftop solar panels. The initiative allows families to generate their own electricity, reduce dependence on conventional power sources and lower monthly electricity expenses. In July 2026, the scheme recorded its highest-ever monthly addition, with 5.06 lakh households receiving rooftop solar installations. Daily installations also rose from 5,038 in October 2025 to nearly 16,328 in July 2026.

The government has transferred Rs 28,024 crore in subsidies directly to beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. Nearly 19 lakh households are now reporting zero electricity bills, while more than 12 lakh households generated additional income by selling surplus electricity to the grid during the financial year 2024-25. These households collectively earned Rs 421 crore, providing an average additional annual income of around Rs 3,500 per household.
The scheme has also focused on expanding solar access among economically weaker sections. Through the Utility Led Aggregation model, 1.6 lakh rooftop solar installations have been completed for PMAY, BPL and SC/ST households across four states. The programme has supported concessional loans at an interest rate of 5.75 per cent for more than 21.87 lakh applicants, while a total rooftop solar capacity of 14.8 GW has been commissioned under the initiative. The government said the scheme has created a strong support network with over 34,000 registered vendors, trained more than 2.32 lakh individuals, and solarised over one lakh government buildings as part of its clean energy expansion efforts.
