InterGlobe Aviation's newly appointed Chief Executive Officer Willie Walsh has expressed confidence in leading IndiGo through its next phase of expansion, praising the airline's achievements over the past two decades and outlining a vision focused on sustained growth, operational resilience and global connectivity. In his first address to employees, accessed by NDTV Profit, Walsh said IndiGo had established itself as one of the world's most respected airlines through a strong foundation, clear strategy and consistent focus on operational excellence.

Addressing employees, Walsh said he had long admired IndiGo's journey and described the carrier as an outstanding airline that had transformed air travel in India by making flying accessible to millions. Drawing on his experience leading British Airways, International Airlines Group (IAG) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), he noted that building a successful airline is a significant challenge. He pointed out that 408 airlines had ceased operations worldwide over the past decade, making IndiGo's sustained growth and profitability particularly noteworthy.

Looking ahead, Walsh said the airline must remain agile in response to evolving challenges facing the aviation industry, including airspace disruptions, supply chain constraints and changing global conditions. He emphasised that while the operating environment has become more complex, IndiGo's long-term direction remains unchanged. According to Walsh, maintaining discipline, resilience and a continued focus on customer trust will be critical as the airline expands its operations.

Walsh also highlighted IndiGo's substantial growth pipeline, noting that the airline is yet to receive more than 900 aircraft on order. He said the addition of new aircraft and the continued expansion of the international network would enable IndiGo to connect India with more global destinations than ever before. He added that India's growing economy, rising demand for air travel and favourable geographical location position the country to emerge as a major global aviation hub, with IndiGo well placed to play a leading role in that transformation.

Reiterating that safety will remain the airline's top priority, Walsh said he plans to engage with employees across all levels to better understand operational challenges and strengthen organisational confidence. Earlier in the day, IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia welcomed Walsh in an email to employees, expressing confidence that the former IATA Director General would guide the airline into its next stage of growth and help build on its position as India's largest carrier and one of the world's leading airlines.
