India is observing National Handloom Day on August 7 to celebrate the country’s rich weaving heritage and recognise the contribution of handloom weavers and artisans. On the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the skilled workers associated with the sector and assured continued support for the growth and promotion of handloom traditions across the country.
National Handloom Day is celebrated every year on August 7 to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905. The historic movement encouraged Indians to promote locally made products and reject foreign goods, making handloom a symbol of self-reliance and national pride during the freedom struggle.
In his message on Friday, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the importance of the handloom sector in India’s development journey. He said the industry plays a significant role in rural empowerment, women-led development and the country’s efforts towards becoming “Atmanirbhar” or self-reliant.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the dedication and skills of weavers and artisans who have preserved India’s traditional textile heritage for generations. He emphasised the need to support these communities and promote the use of indigenous handloom products among consumers.
National Handloom Day provides an opportunity to showcase India’s diverse textile traditions, with different regions known for their unique fabrics, designs and weaving techniques. From sarees and shawls to traditional garments and modern fashion products, handloom textiles represent the cultural identity and craftsmanship of various communities across the country.
