Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Chennai on October 11 to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for development projects worth more than ₹13,000 crore across Tamil Nadu. The projects span metro rail, highways, railway infrastructure, ports, petroleum and education, with a focus on improving connectivity, transport capacity and research facilities. The visit will include the inauguration of major infrastructure developments and the dedication of completed projects to the nation. Modi is also scheduled to visit IIT Madras and attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School.
A key highlight of the visit will be the inauguration of the Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail project, developed at a cost of around ₹4,900 crore. The corridor includes a 3.7-kilometre double-decker structure and advanced signalling systems designed to support driverless operations. The new section is expected to improve connectivity between Chennai’s western suburbs and the city centre, while reducing travel time for commuters. The Prime Minister is also scheduled to take a metro ride between Porur Bypass and Poonamallee Bypass stations.
Road connectivity will receive a major boost through national highway projects worth approximately ₹3,700 crore. These include the inauguration of the 36-kilometre, four-lane Vadugapatti–Therkuvenganallur section of National Highway 744 and a 30-kilometre section of the Madurai Ring Road on NH-744A. Modi will also lay the foundation stone for a four-lane bypass at Thiruvarur on NH-83. The projects are intended to ease congestion, improve travel between important regional centres and facilitate the movement of passengers and goods.

The upgrades are aimed at improving passenger facilities, reducing delays at busy railway crossings and strengthening regional rail connectivity. Port infrastructure will also feature prominently, with projects planned at Chennai Port, V.O. Chidambaranar Port and Kamarajar Port to expand cargo-handling capacity and improve maritime logistics.
The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for a ₹1,620-crore lube oil base stocks project at Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Manali refinery. With a planned annual capacity of 270,000 tonnes, the facility aims to support domestic production of premium-grade lubricant ingredients. At IIT Madras, Modi will dedicate the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre to the nation and launch a scientific initiative to create detailed three-dimensional maps of human brains at cellular resolution. He is also scheduled to visit the Jalakandeswarar Temple in Chennai and attend the school’s golden jubilee celebrations, making the visit a combination of infrastructure announcements, scientific research initiatives and public engagements.
