Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 31, 2025, praised Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his visit to Gujarat’s Statue of Unity, hailing it as a powerful symbol of national unity that will inspire Indians to explore the country’s diverse landmarks. Abdullah, attending a tourism promotion event in Ahmedabad, shared glimpses of his morning run along the iconic Sabarmati Riverfront and his visit to the world’s tallest statue, dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Modi, responding on X, wrote, “Kashmir to Kevadia! Good to see Shri Omar Abdullah Ji enjoying his run at the Sabarmati Riverfront and visiting the Statue of Unity. His visit to SoU gives an important message of unity and will inspire our fellow Indians to travel to different parts of India.” The 182-meter Statue of Unity, located in Ekta Nagar, Narmada district, honors India’s first home minister, known as the “Iron Man” for unifying the nation.
Abdullah, captivated by the Sabarmati Riverfront’s promenade, posted, “It’s one of the nicest places I’ve run, a pleasure to share with walkers and runners, passing the stunning Atal Foot Bridge.” Speaking at the Sardar Sarovar Dam, he marveled at its scale, noting, “These structures are a true tribute to Sardar Patel and symbols of new India, transforming lives by irrigating arid regions like Kutch.” He contrasted this with Jammu and Kashmir’s past limitations under the Indus Water Treaty, expressing hope after its recent suspension, which could enable similar water management projects.

Abdullah’s visit, part of Gujarat’s push to boost tourism, aligns with a 30% surge in visitors to the Statue of Unity in 2024, with over 5 million annual tourists. The site, featuring a viewing gallery at 153 meters and a museum, has become a beacon of India’s infrastructure prowess. Political analysts see Modi’s endorsement as a gesture to bridge regional divides, especially as Jammu and Kashmir navigates its post-Article 370 phase. Abdullah’s National Conference has prioritized tourism to revive J&K’s economy, drawing parallels with Gujarat’s model.
