The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) at the historic South Block on Raisina Hill will be vacated on Friday, marking the end of an era for one of India’s most iconic administrative buildings. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to chair the final Cabinet meeting at the South Block before shifting operations to the newly constructed Sewa Teerth complex.
The British-era North and South Blocks, which form a key part of the national capital’s skyline, have housed some of India’s most important ministries since Independence. The South Block currently accommodates the Prime Minister’s Office along with the Ministries of Defence and External Affairs. The relocation is part of the Centre’s broader Central Vista redevelopment project aimed at modernising administrative infrastructure.
Over the years, several landmark decisions have been taken from the Prime Minister’s Office at South Block, shaping India’s domestic and foreign policy trajectory. Major economic reforms, national security decisions, and key diplomatic initiatives have been cleared from the premises, underscoring its historic significance in governance.

The shift to the Sewa Teerth complex is intended to provide upgraded facilities, enhanced security and integrated administrative spaces for government functioning. Officials have said the move aligns with efforts to streamline operations and accommodate evolving technological and infrastructural needs.
As the government prepares to vacate the colonial-era building, the transition symbolises both continuity and change — retaining institutional authority while moving into a modern framework. The final Cabinet meeting at South Block is expected to serve as a ceremonial moment, closing a significant chapter in India’s administrative history.
