Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the Northeast as India’s growth engine, crediting the BJP-led government’s 11-year efforts for transforming a region once hindered by “vote bank” politics. Speaking virtually from Lengpui Airport near Aizawl, where heavy rains prevented his visit to Lammual Ground, Modi launched development projects worth Rs 9,000 crore, including Mizoram’s historic first railway line, the Bairabi-Sairang line, marking the state’s entry onto India’s railway map.
The Prime Minister emphasized Mizoram’s pivotal role in the Centre’s Act East policy, highlighting projects like the Kaladan multimodal transit project and new railway lines that will connect the state to Southeast Asia. “This is a historic day for Mizoram,” Modi said, noting that the railway, overcoming challenging terrains, will link Aizawl with major metropolises, revolutionizing connectivity, education, culture, and economic opportunities. “Enhanced connectivity will create jobs, boost tourism, and bring those once neglected into the mainstream,” he added.
Modi praised Mizoram’s contributions to India’s freedom movement and nation-building, underscoring its potential in sports through the National Sports Policy. He also highlighted the Northeast’s entrepreneurial surge, with 4,500 startups and 25 incubators driving innovation. On economic reforms, Modi noted that new GST rates have reduced taxes on medicines, cancer treatments, and vehicles, making healthcare and transportation more affordable compared to the Congress era, when heavy taxes burdened citizens.

India’s economy, growing at 7.8% in the first quarter of 2025-26, was hailed as the fastest among major global economies. Modi also referenced Operation Sindoor, where Indian soldiers, equipped with ‘Made in India’ weapons, delivered a strong message to terror sponsors, showcasing the nation’s growing military prowess.
Despite the rain-disrupted event, Modi’s virtual address resonated with optimism, positioning Mizoram and the Northeast as vital cogs in India’s development journey. The railway’s launch, a technical marvel, promises to transform lives by opening new avenues for trade, tourism, and connectivity. As Mizoram celebrates this milestone, the state stands poised to leverage its strategic location and newfound infrastructure to emerge as a key player in India’s economic and cultural landscape.
