Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged citizens across the country to remain cautious as several regions continue to experience intense heatwave conditions. He also appealed to people to extend simple acts of kindness during the harsh weather, such as offering a glass of water to those in need, especially individuals exposed to the sun for long hours.
Taking to social media platform ‘X’, PM Modi said that rising temperatures are affecting large parts of the country and warned that the heat can be physically demanding and dangerous. He stressed the importance of staying hydrated and taking adequate precautions while stepping outdoors. The Prime Minister also highlighted that small gestures of care, including sharing drinking water, can make a meaningful difference during extreme weather conditions.
His message comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heatwave warnings for the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR), where temperatures are expected to remain extremely high over the next two days. The maximum temperature in the region may reach up to 45 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is likely to hover around 28 degrees Celsius, accompanied by dry and hot surface winds.

According to the IMD, humidity levels are also expected to fluctuate, adding to discomfort during peak daytime hours. Authorities have advised residents to avoid outdoor activity during the afternoon, stay hydrated, and take precautions against direct sun exposure. Health experts have warned that prolonged exposure to such conditions can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses.
Weather conditions, however, are expected to begin changing from May 28 onwards, with the possibility of thunderstorms and light rainfall in parts of the region. The IMD has forecast a gradual drop in temperature from May 29, when maximum temperatures may fall significantly due to pre-monsoon activity, including strong winds and intermittent showers.
Meteorologists have noted that late-May weather patterns across North and Central India are influenced by pre-monsoon systems, which often bring thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. These conditions are expected to provide relief from the ongoing heatwave by the end of the month, with more stable weather likely to return in early June.
