INDIA bloc parties, led by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, unitedly demanded a parliamentary discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, alleging it threatens the voting rights of minorities, Dalits, adivasis, and migrant workers.
At a Vijay Chowk press conference, Kharge accused the government of blocking the debate, claiming the SIR exercise risks “stealing” votes undemocratically and casting doubt on citizens’ rights. “Everything under the sun can be discussed in Parliament,” he asserted, criticizing the government’s refusal to address the issue.
Trinamool Congress’s Sagarika Ghose announced continued protests inside and outside Parliament, including a march to the Election Commission on August 11, while alleging attacks on Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled states. Congress MP K C Venugopal called the SIR a direct assault on democracy, accusing the Election Commission of ignoring even the Supreme Court.
DMK’s Tiruchi Siva and CPI-M’s John Brittas emphasized the voter list’s role as democracy’s cornerstone, alleging government manipulation. AAP’s Sandeep Pathak and CPI’s Sandosh Kumar P linked SIR to broader democratic concerns, with IUML’s E T Mohammed Basheer warning of nationwide electoral implications.
Earlier, INDIA bloc MPs, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, staged a protest march in Parliament with a “discussion not deletion” banner, demanding SIR’s rollback. Vadra criticized the government’s reluctance, urging a quick resolution through open debate.
