The political landscape of Odisha is reeling from the loss of Karendra Majhi, a former BJP MLA and revered tribal leader, who passed away at 52 in a Bhubaneswar private hospital on Sunday night. Majhi, who had been battling kidney-related ailments, leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service to the Kandhamal district’s Baliguda constituency, which he represented in the Odisha Assembly in 2004 and 2009.
A proud member of the Kutia Kondh tribe, Majhi was a trailblazer, becoming the community’s first postgraduate and authoring three books in the Kui language, amplifying tribal voices through his literary contributions. His grassroots leadership and commitment to tribal welfare earned him widespread respect across political lines.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed profound grief, stating on X, “I am deeply saddened and heartbroken. His departure is an irreparable loss. I pray to Lord Jagannath for the peace of the departed soul.” BJP state president Manmohan Samal, who visited Capital Hospital to pay respects, described Majhi as a “prominent leader whose rise from humble beginnings was extraordinary.” Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also mourned, noting, “His contributions to Baliguda’s development will remain unforgettable.”

On Monday morning, Majhi’s mortal remains were brought to the Odisha Legislative Assembly, where lawmakers from various parties offered floral tributes in a somber state sendoff. The body was later taken to the BJP state office, where leaders and supporters gathered to honor his memory. The Kandhamal district, where Majhi was a towering figure, is enveloped in grief, with citizens recalling his tireless advocacy for tribal rights.
Majhi’s political journey began with his election on a BJP ticket in 2004, followed by a second term in 2009. Despite contesting in 2014 and 2019, he remained a steadfast voice for his community. His passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes on social media, with Odisha Deputy CM Pravati Parida calling it a “significant setback” for the state’s political fraternity.
As Odisha bids farewell to a visionary leader, Majhi’s contributions to tribal empowerment and regional development will continue to inspire future generations. His funeral arrangements are underway, with thousands expected to attend in Baliguda to pay their final respects.
