In the wake of a tragic fire at Rituraj Hotel in Burrabazar that claimed 14 lives on April 29, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has ordered the immediate closure of all rooftop restaurants across the city.
KMC Mayor and Municipal Affairs Minister Firhad Hakim announced the decision on Friday, emphasizing that rooftops, as common spaces, cannot be used for commercial purposes, to ensure unobstructed emergency access.
Hakim stated that notices have been issued for the immediate shutdown of rooftop eateries, directing them to relocate to lower floors or alternative locations. “If they fail to comply, we will take appropriate steps,” he warned, stopping short of confirming immediate forced closures.

A rooftop restaurant in Park Street has already received a closure notice, with KMC compiling a borough-wise report to enforce the order citywide.
The mayor revealed plans for a meeting with the municipal commissioner, fire brigade, and police to devise strategies to prevent future fire incidents.
The April 29 blaze at Mechhuapatti highlighted critical safety lapses, prompting calls for heightened public vigilance. Hakim urged citizens to prioritize safety, as the KMC intensifies inspections to ensure compliance with fire safety norms.
The closure order reflects a broader push to address safety concerns in high-risk commercial spaces following one of Kolkata’s deadliest fire incidents in recent years.
