Samajwadi Party (SP) Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman defiantly declared on Thursday that he will not apologise “in this life” for his controversial remarks labeling 16th-century Rajput ruler Rana Sanga a “traitor” who invited Mughal founder Babur to defeat Ibrahim Lodi.
Speaking to PTI Videos, Suman doubled down, insisting history cannot be denied, even as his Agra residence faced a violent attack allegedly by Karni Sena activists the previous day.
“They need to accept the truth,” Suman asserted. “Babur was invited by Rana Sanga to oust Ibrahim Lodi, believing Babur would leave after plundering. When their pact collapsed, they clashed in Fatehpur Sikri. Rana Sanga fought bravely but lost—it’s history.”
The MP’s remarks, first aired in Parliament, have sparked outrage, culminating in Wednesday’s assault on his home near Hari Parvat Chauraha, where vandals smashed windows, damaged cars, and injured a policeman.
Suman accused the mob of targeting his family with “life-threatening intent,” claiming they arrived with a bulldozer. “I’ve informed the Rajya Sabha Chairman about threats since March 22 via social media,” he said. Agra police have filed an FIR against an “unknown mob,” despite the attack coinciding with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s presence in the city for a public event.
Karni Sena chief Suraj Pal Singh Amu condemned Suman’s statement as an insult to a Rajput hero, demanding apologies from both Suman and SP leader Akhilesh Yadav.
The caste-based group, known for advocating Rajput pride, led the rampage, shattering the calm of the upscale neighborhood. As political tensions simmer, Suman remains unyielding, framing his stance as a defense of historical fact rather than a personal affront.
