Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has directed the state Education Department to ensure government school teachers are posted in their preferred blocks or nearby areas, addressing long-standing demands for fair transfers. The announcement, made on Thursday, aims to stabilize the education system, which has faced disruptions due to teacher shortages and dissatisfaction over postings.
In a post on X, Kumar outlined a new policy where district-level committees will oversee intra-district teacher postings, prioritizing teachers’ preferred locations. For inter-district transfers, teachers will provide three district preferences, and postings will be confined to those choices. “Teachers are vital for our children’s future. I urge them to focus on education without anxiety,” Kumar stated, emphasizing the reforms’ intent to boost morale and efficiency.
The directive follows widespread feedback on the Education Department’s recent transfer process, which introduced an online self-transfer system to address vacancies and teacher discontent. In 2023, Bihar appointed over 1.2 lakh teachers under a special recruitment drive, but protests erupted over transfers, with many female teachers citing challenges like long commutes and family separation. The new system, launched in July 2025, allows teachers to apply for transfers online, aiming to fill 70,000 vacant posts and ensure subject-specific teachers in schools.

Education Minister Sunil Kumar noted that the policy aligns with Bihar’s goal of improving learning outcomes, with 75% of schools now reporting adequate staffing. However, posts on X highlight ongoing concerns, with teachers demanding clearer timelines for implementation. The move is seen as a step to balance teacher welfare with educational quality, amid Bihar’s push to modernize its school system.
