On Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will inaugurate the Buddha Samyak Darshan Museum-cum-Memorial Stupa in Vaishali, a monumental tribute to Lord Buddha’s legacy.
Spanning 72 acres near the sacred Pushkarni pond, this Rs 550 crore complex, constructed with 42,373 pink sandstone blocks from Rajasthan, is set to become a global Buddhist pilgrimage hub. Buddhist monks from 15 countries, including China, Japan, and Thailand, will attend the ceremony, marking a historic moment for Bihar’s cultural heritage.
The centerpiece of the stupa is a sacred relic of Lord Buddha, discovered during 1958–62 excavations and deemed among the most authentic by 7th-century Chinese scholar Xuanzang. Housed on the museum’s first floor, the relic casket—containing Buddha’s ashes, beads, and a golden leaf—will draw devotees worldwide.
The complex, built without cement using traditional tongue-and-groove techniques, features a 33-meter-tall stupa, a meditation hall for 2,000, a library, an amphitheater, and eco-friendly amenities like a 500 kW solar plant and extensive greenery.
Vaishali, known as the world’s first republic and a site of women’s inclusion in the Buddhist Sangha, will gain prominence on the global Buddhist map. The museum’s exhibits will showcase Buddha’s life and teachings, boosting tourism, culture, and local employment.
