The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has revised the procedure for updating names on Aadhaar, introducing separate requirements depending on the nature of the correction or change. The revised process aims to strengthen document verification and reduce the possibility of fraudulent name updates. The new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), issued in September 2026, replaces the earlier procedure issued in October 2021.
Under the revised guidelines, minor corrections can be made when the person's identity remains unchanged. These include expanding initials or abbreviations, adding or removing a middle name or surname, changing the order of names and correcting minor spelling errors where the pronunciation remains similar. Formatting-related corrections, such as removing full stops or correcting irregular capitalisation, are also covered. Applicants must submit a valid Proof of Identity document carrying the correct name.
The guidelines also specify procedures for correcting mistakes made during Aadhaar enrolment or data entry. For adults, an Annexure B affidavit must be submitted along with an accepted Proof of Identity or Proof of Relationship document. In the case of minors, parents or guardians are required to provide an Annexure C affidavit along with the relevant identity or relationship documents. UIDAI has also provided provisions for cases where the English version of a name is correct but the corresponding regional-language entry contains an error.

Separate provisions apply to name updates following marriage or divorce. Applicants seeking such changes must submit the prescribed Annexure D affidavit along with a valid Proof of Identity document. The affidavit must establish that the update is linked to marriage or divorce and does not represent a change in the person's underlying identity. A registered marriage certificate can also be accepted as supporting documentation. The revised procedure further covers corrections such as removing an “urf” or “alias” from an Aadhaar name.
For requests involving a complete change of name, UIDAI has prescribed stricter documentation requirements. Applicants must provide a Central Gazette notification, published newspaper advertisements and standard identity proof before the request can be considered. The authority has also directed officials to verify the authenticity of documents, affidavits and Gazette notifications submitted by applicants. The revised process is intended to ensure that Aadhaar name records are changed only on the basis of appropriate and verifiable documentation.
