The family of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose has written to President Droupadi Murmu, urging her to take immediate steps to bring the freedom fighter’s mortal remains from the Renkoji Temple in Japan to India. The appeal aims to have the repatriation completed ahead of Netaji’s 129th birth anniversary on January 23, 2026.
Chandra Kumar Bose, Netaji’s grandnephew, expressed disappointment that the hero’s remains are still in a foreign land. “It is unfortunate that Netaji’s mortal remains are still abroad. We humbly appeal to the President that they be brought back before his birth anniversary,” he said in a video message.
The family, including Netaji’s daughter Professor Anita Bose-Pfaff, has consistently raised the matter with the Indian government, echoing the long-standing demand of Indian National Army veterans to honor Netaji’s legacy by returning his remains to the motherland.

In their letter, the family also highlighted the historic milestone of October 21, 2025, marking 80 years since the establishment of the Provisional Government of Azad Hind in Singapore. They noted plans to build an INA monument in Delhi to honor soldiers of the INA and commemorate Netaji’s call, “Chalo Delhi,” reflecting his final push for India’s independence.
The letter emphasized that repatriating Netaji’s remains would ensure that his legacy remains deeply rooted in the hearts of future generations. “INA veterans, as well as members of Netaji’s family, have repeatedly requested the Government of India to take positive action to bring back the hero’s remains,” the statement read.
The family’s appeal reinforces decades of efforts by historians, veterans, and descendants of Netaji, seeking a fitting tribute to one of India’s most revered freedom fighters by returning his mortal remains to his homeland.
