Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli is set to visit India on September 16 for a two-day official trip, the Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday. While preparations are underway, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lok Bahadur Chhetri noted that the exact schedule is still being finalized. Sources at the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the mid-September timeline, marking Oli’s first India visit since assuming his fourth term as prime minister in July 2024.
Oli, leader of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), broke tradition by choosing China for his first foreign visit in December 2024, meeting President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. The move sparked speculation in local media about strained ties with New Delhi, especially amid claims that India had not extended an invitation. Oli dismissed these concerns on Thursday, confirming groundwork for the visit is in progress on both sides.
The visit, expected to focus on strengthening bilateral ties, comes as Nepal navigates its delicate balance between India and China. Oli’s trip is seen as an effort to address New Delhi’s concerns and reinforce economic and diplomatic cooperation, particularly after recent border discussions and India’s aid during Nepal’s 2024 monsoon floods. Posts on X reflect mixed sentiments, with some Nepalis hopeful for renewed India-Nepal collaboration, while others question Oli’s shift in foreign policy priorities.
