Navi Mumbai International Airport is set to begin commercial operations on December 25, and commuters will now have an added convenience: the new Targhar railway station. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described the station as “a special gift for Mumbaikars” in a post on X, highlighting its significance for both travelers and airport staff.
Targhar station, located just 1.5 km from the airport, is a critical piece of infrastructure aimed at enhancing connectivity. The station will provide easy access for daily commuters, airport employees, and travelers, with walkways and shuttle services linking it directly to the airport terminal.
The station has been developed as a future-ready transit hub, spanning 2 lakh square feet, and will serve as a key interchange between the Harbour Line, the upcoming Coastal Metro, and the proposed airport skytrain. This integration will ensure smooth transfers for passengers traveling to and from the airport.

Built at a cost of Rs 112 crore by the City Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), Targhar station features three island platforms and two end platforms, each measuring 270 meters in length and 12 meters in width. Commuter-friendly amenities include cross-platform subways, parking facilities at all corners, and dedicated drop-off zones for buses, cars, and autorickshaws.
Fadnavis also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for approving additional local train services on the Nerul-Uran-Nerul and Belapur-Uran-Belapur routes, with planned stoppages at Targhar and Gavhan, further enhancing passenger convenience.
Meanwhile, the airport itself has successfully completed its Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) exercise, simulating full-scale passenger operations. Hundreds of participants, including airline staff, CISF personnel, and contractors, tested check-in, security, boarding, and baggage systems, signaling that the airport is fully prepared for its December 25 launch.
