The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and neighbouring Thane, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations as monsoon activity intensifies across parts of Maharashtra. The weather department has also forecast continued rainfall in Mumbai between July 20 and July 22, indicating that wet conditions are likely to persist over the next few days.
Mumbai witnessed a fresh spell of heavy showers on Saturday night after a brief period of relatively dry weather. Several parts of the city recorded more than 30 mm of rainfall within two hours, prompting the IMD to update its forecast and issue alerts for Mumbai and surrounding districts. The department has advised residents to remain cautious as rainfall intensity may increase in some areas.
The IMD has placed Mumbai under an orange alert, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places along with strong winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph. A similar orange alert has been issued for Thane district, where intense rainfall and strong winds are expected. Palghar, meanwhile, remains under a yellow alert, with forecasts of heavy rainfall at isolated locations and winds of similar intensity.

The weather agency had earlier issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, predicting heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. With monsoon systems becoming more active, the IMD has indicated that several regions across the country may experience changes in rainfall patterns over the coming days.
According to the IMD, rainfall activity is expected to increase over parts of Delhi, Mumbai, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Active monsoon conditions are likely to continue across north, east and northeast India for the next six to seven days, with heavy showers expected in several areas.
However, west-central and south Peninsular India are likely to experience comparatively subdued monsoon conditions during the same period. Authorities in affected regions have urged people to stay updated with weather advisories and take necessary precautions during periods of intense rainfall.
