A tragic landslide struck Varsha Nagar in Vikhroli Parksite, an eastern suburb of Mumbai, at approximately 2:39 am on Saturday, August 16, 2025, claiming the lives of two family members and injuring two others amid relentless heavy rainfall. The incident, reported under the collector’s jurisdiction, occurred when soil and stones from a nearby hillock collapsed onto a hut, devastating a family residing there.
According to officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the four victims were promptly rushed to Rajawadi Hospital. Shalu Mishra, 19, and Suresh Mishra, 50, were declared dead on arrival, while Aarti Mishra, 45, and Ruturaj Mishra, 20, sustained injuries but are reported to be in stable condition. Emergency response teams, including the fire brigade, local police, and civic staff, were swiftly mobilized to the site to manage the crisis.
In response to the disaster, authorities have relocated other residents of the area to safer locations to prevent further casualties. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges posed by heavy monsoon rains in Mumbai, prompting heightened vigilance and safety measures across the city.
