With civic polls looming, the Mumbai Congress unveiled its 'Mumbai Virasat Milan' campaign on Saturday to mobilize the city’s north Indian community and underscore its longstanding ties with them. The initiative, led by Mumbai Congress chief Varsha Gaikwad, aims to celebrate the community’s contributions to Mumbai’s growth while addressing their concerns, particularly in light of recent tensions fueled by regional parties like the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena (UBT), which have been accused of targeting north Indians over language disputes.
Speaking at a press conference, Gaikwad, the Lok Sabha MP from Mumbai North Central, emphasized the Congress’s historical support for north Indians. “While some forces spread hatred, the Congress stands firmly with the north Indian community,” she said, highlighting the party’s efforts to provide representation through roles like corporators, legislators, MPs, and ministers. However, she criticized some individuals for exploiting these positions for personal gain rather than community welfare.
The campaign, spearheaded by the Congress’s North Indian Cell, will feature events across Mumbai to showcase the community’s cultural heritage and the party’s role in its advancement. Key issues, including railway access and hawkers’ rights, will be prioritized to strengthen grassroots support. Gaikwad noted that the initiative aims to rebuild organizational strength and counter divisive narratives.

This move comes as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, delayed since March 2022 due to delimitation and OBC reservation issues, are set to occur soon following ward boundary finalization. The Congress’s focus on north Indians, a significant vote bank in areas like Kandivali and Chandivali, is strategic, especially after the BJP’s similar outreach in past elections. With Mumbai’s political landscape heating up, the campaign signals Congress’s intent to solidify its position in the competitive civic polls.
