The Lok Sabha was adjourned until 2 pm today as opposition MPs, led by Congress, unleashed vociferous protests demanding a discussion on the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar ahead of the state’s Assembly elections. The session, which began at 11 am, saw Speaker Om Birla pay tributes to three former members, including the late Jharkhand CM Shibu Soren, before opposition MPs disrupted proceedings with slogans and placards.
Despite Birla’s attempts to maintain order, allowing questions on Direct Benefit Schemes and Ladakh infrastructure projects during Question Hour, the protests escalated. The opposition accused the Election Commission of manipulating voter lists, intensifying their demand for a parliamentary debate.
Birla criticized the opposition, stating, “Your behaviour and activities have lowered the dignity and honour of the House,” and accused them of systematically obstructing proceedings. After just 25 minutes of business, he adjourned the House until 2 pm as the uproar continued.
The Monsoon session, which began on July 21, has been plagued by disruptions, initially over demands for a discussion on Operation Sindoor and later on the SIR issue in Bihar. Apart from debates on Operation Sindoor, little legislative business has been conducted, with repeated adjournments highlighting the deepening rift between the government and opposition.
The ongoing protests underscore the contentious atmosphere in Parliament as critical issues like electoral integrity take center stage.
