The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Monday amid relentless protests by opposition parties, led by Congress, demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar ahead of the state’s upcoming polls. The disruptions, marked by sloganeering and placards, have stalled legislative progress since the Monsoon session began on July 21.
Jagdambika Pal, chairing the session, expressed frustration, noting that not a single bill has been passed this session due to repeated interruptions. He highlighted two sports bills listed for discussion, urging members to prioritize athletes’ interests. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya echoed the need for constructive debate. Despite the chaos, a statutory resolution on customs duty, moved by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, was passed via voice vote.
Speaker Om Birla criticized the opposition’s tactics, stating, “You are lowering the House’s dignity by systematically obstructing proceedings.” He appealed for cooperation, emphasizing that Question Hour addresses critical public issues, but the opposition’s protests forced an adjournment until 2 pm and later for the entire day. Birla also referenced an incident involving Congress MP R Sudha’s gold chain being snatched in Delhi, noting police action as directed.

The session, now in its third week, has seen little progress, with earlier disruptions focused on Operation Sindoor before shifting to the Bihar SIR issue. Birla urged members to raise concerns through dialogue, promising ample time for discussion, but the opposition’s persistence continues to paralyze Parliament’s functioning.
