A mob allegedly attacked a team of Meghalaya Police in Haryana’s Nuh district while they were transporting an ATM robbery suspect, leading officers to open fire in self-defence. One person was injured during the retaliatory firing.
According to police officials, the incident took place on Tuesday evening when the Meghalaya police team was escorting the accused, Rahul Khan, after producing him in a court in Punhana. Khan, a resident of Wazidpur, had been arrested in connection with an interstate ATM theft case and was being taken on transit remand.
Officials said the situation escalated near a hotel in Sikrawa village when the accused allegedly insisted on stopping the vehicle and suddenly grabbed the steering wheel in an attempt to overturn it and escape. Around 30 people then reportedly gathered and attacked the police team in an effort to free him.

During the confrontation, Meghalaya police personnel opened fire in self-defence, injuring one individual. Authorities said the officers acted to protect themselves and prevent the suspect from escaping.
Following the incident, the Haryana Police registered a First Information Report based on a complaint filed by a Meghalaya police officer. The FIR names 12 individuals and several unidentified persons.
The case has been registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duties, assaulting police personnel, and attempting to snatch official weapons. Police said further investigation into the incident is underway.
