A 3.3-magnitude tremor struck Gujarat’s Kutch district at 9:52 AM IST on Thursday, July 31, 2025, with its epicenter 16 km south-southwest of Bela, according to the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) in Gandhinagar. The minor quake, felt across parts of the district, caused no reported casualties or property damage, a district disaster response official confirmed to PTI.
Kutch lies in a “very high risk” seismic zone, prone to frequent low-intensity tremors due to its location on the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The region’s history includes the devastating 2001 Bhuj earthquake, a 7.7-magnitude disaster that killed nearly 13,800 people, injured 167,000, and destroyed entire towns, marking it as India’s third-largest and second-most destructive quake in two centuries.
The ISR noted that Thursday’s tremor was typical for Kutch, where minor quakes occur regularly, often without significant impact. Local authorities remain vigilant, with monitoring systems tracking seismic activity to ensure rapid response capabilities. The National Earthquake Information System reported 42 tremors in Kutch in 2024, mostly below 4.0 magnitude, underscoring the region’s ongoing seismic activity. Residents are urged to stay prepared, with experts advocating for earthquake-resistant construction to mitigate future risks.
