Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced that the state government has invested over Rs 5,000 crore in the past seven years to revolutionize road infrastructure, significantly enhancing connectivity and driving economic growth.
Speaking at a public event in North Garo Hills on Monday, Sangma emphasized that these investments are central to a broader developmental strategy aimed at strengthening infrastructure, empowering women, and creating opportunities for the youth. “Road connectivity is the backbone of progress,” he said, underscoring the transformative impact on rural communities.
Key projects like the Chidaret-Thapa Bazar and Bajengdoba-Resubelpara roads have reduced travel times and boosted local economies by enabling farmers and small businesses to access broader markets. “We’ve sanctioned projects worth over Rs 5,000 crore, linking rural areas to markets, schools, and healthcare,” Sangma noted. The state’s focus on infrastructure has outpaced two decades of prior progress, with exports of organic fruits, fertilizers, and seeds to markets like Dubai, showcasing the power of improved connectivity.
Sangma highlighted that better roads have enhanced access to education and healthcare, created jobs, and fostered entrepreneurship, particularly among women and youth. “What wasn’t achieved in 20 years, we’ve done in seven,” he claimed. The government plans to further expand road networks, aiming to transform Meghalaya into a hub of opportunity while preserving its cultural and natural heritage.
