The upcoming Meerut Metro is set to become India’s fastest metro service, with trains capable of operating at a maximum speed of 120 kmph. Officials said the high-speed capability will significantly reduce travel time across the city. The project is part of efforts to modernise urban mobility in Uttar Pradesh. It is expected to improve daily commuting for thousands of passengers. The service is likely to be inaugurated soon.
The metro will run on a 21-kilometre corridor between Meerut South and Modipuram. The route will include 12 stations and is designed to cover the entire stretch in about 30 minutes, including halts. Authorities say the fast end-to-end timing will make it one of the most efficient urban transit systems in the region. The corridor aims to ease congestion and provide reliable public transport. It will serve as a key mobility backbone for the city.
In a first-of-its-kind model in India, the Meerut Metro will share tracks and infrastructure with the semi-high-speed Namo Bharat trains. This integrated approach combines regional rapid transit with city metro operations on the same network. Officials believe the model will optimise infrastructure use and reduce project costs. The system is being seen as a new template for future urban transport projects. It also strengthens connectivity between regional and intra-city travel.

The metro will deploy modern three-coach stainless-steel trainsets designed for energy efficiency. Each fully air-conditioned train will accommodate more than 700 passengers, including 173 seated commuters. Features include regenerative braking, Automatic Train Protection, and Automatic Train Operation compatibility. Passenger amenities such as USB charging ports, luggage racks, and reserved seating have been included. The trains will carry a distinctive fluorescent green, blue and orange colour scheme.
Safety and accessibility have been built into both stations and rolling stock, officials said. CCTV surveillance, platform screen doors, lifts, and wheelchair spaces are part of the design. Dedicated areas for stretchers and priority seating for women, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities have also been provided. The project is expected to boost economic activity and urban connectivity in Meerut. With its launch, the city will become the fifth in Uttar Pradesh to have a metro network.
