Security forces launched an extensive cordon and search operation (CASO) across 11 localities in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Saturday, following reports of suspicious movement near the Line of Control (LoC). The operation, involving the Indian Army’s Rashtriya Rifles, the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), targeted areas in Mendhar, Mankote, and Surankote, prompted by local residents’ alerts about potential terrorist activity.
The operation covered Behra Kund, Potha Jungle, Surankote, Peer Tanora, Sangla, Mohalla Lohar Chandimarh, Kandi, Kangra, Keri Galhuta, Mughal Marah, and Poli Wala Dhok. Security officials acted swiftly after villagers reported suspicious individuals, possibly armed, moving in the dense border belt. Additional reinforcements, including sniffer dogs and aerial surveillance, were deployed to strengthen the operation, which began early Saturday and continued into the evening.
The Poonch sector, known for its rugged terrain and proximity to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, has seen a surge in infiltration attempts in 2025, with 4,139 ceasefire violations by Pakistan reported this year. The operation follows the recent killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Bagu Khan in Gurez on August 23, highlighting heightened security concerns. No contact with suspected terrorists has been reported so far, but officials remain vigilant, citing a “new wave of terrorism” in Poonch over the past two years, as noted by Inspector General of Police, Jammu, BS Tuti.

Locals have been urged to stay alert, with police issuing advisories to report suspicious activities. The operation reflects intensified efforts to curb cross-border terrorism, with recent X posts indicating tightened security across Jammu and Kashmir, including CRPF deployments in response to similar incidents. The search, one of several in Poonch this year, underscores the ongoing challenge of securing the LoC amid frequent drone sightings and infiltration bids.
