Delhi Police have arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly creating and circulating an AI-generated fake poster that falsely depicted a police officer sexually assaulting a woman. The accused, identified as Nadeem, was arrested on Monday and produced before a court, which granted police custody for further investigation. Police said the poster was uploaded and circulated through social media.
According to police, Nadeem claimed to be an independent journalist and had been operating an Instagram account since April. The account had around 24,000 followers and 1,226 posts, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Manjeet said at a press conference. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the creation and circulation of the allegedly fabricated material.
Police said the content falsely portrayed a police officer in a sexual assault scenario involving a woman. Authorities are now investigating whether other individuals were involved in the alleged conspiracy and are making efforts to identify them. The use of AI-generated content in the case has also brought attention to concerns over fabricated material being circulated online and potentially being presented as genuine.

The arrest comes amid a separate controversy involving an assistant commissioner of police who has been accused of sexually harassing a woman journalist during a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi. The allegations involving the police officer and the circulation of the AI-generated poster are separate matters, although both developments have emerged in the same broader context of the recent protest.
ACP Vivek Bhagat was promoted to the rank of additional deputy commissioner on Monday along with three other officers from his batch. However, the order assigning him additional charge was withdrawn on Tuesday. The government said Bhagat, one of 12 DANIPS officers assigned current duty charge of additional DCP, had requested not to take up the additional responsibility until an inquiry into the allegations concerning women journalists was completed.
Delhi Police are continuing their investigation into the AI-generated poster case, including the possibility of involvement by additional people. Nadeem's police custody is expected to allow investigators to examine the creation, distribution and social media circulation of the allegedly fabricated material. Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation and evidence gathered by the authorities.
