A general coach of the Shalimar-Sambalpur Mahima Gosain Express (20831) derailed near Sambalpur City Station in Odisha on Thursday at around 9:18 am, but no injuries or casualties were reported, according to East Coast Railway (ECoR). The incident occurred shortly after the train departed at a very slow speed, preventing a major accident, as confirmed by the train’s guard.
The rear trolley of a general coach next to the guard’s van derailed between Sambalpur City Station and Sambalpur Junction. ECoR officials swiftly responded, transferring passengers to another coach, allowing the train to continue its journey to Sambalpur. “No loss of life or property was reported,” the ECoR statement said, with railway officials, including the Divisional Railway Manager, overseeing restoration efforts at the site.
A viral video on social media showed the derailed coach, prompting quick action from railway police and local authorities. The ECoR emphasized that the low speed mitigated risks, ensuring passenger safety. An investigation is underway to determine the cause, with no disruptions reported to other train services.
