Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced that the long-standing Mahanadi water dispute with Chhattisgarh can be resolved through negotiations, with support from the Central government. During a high-level meeting at Lok Seva Bhavan, Majhi emphasized collaboration to settle the issue, noting slow progress in the Central Water Commission.
Majhi highlighted that the Central Water Commission could provide technical assistance to facilitate talks, fostering better relations between the states. The dispute, currently before a tribunal, stems from Odisha’s claims that Chhattisgarh’s upstream barrages block the Mahanadi River’s free flow, impacting water availability.
Discussions between Majhi and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bishnu Deo Sai occurred earlier this year in Rajasthan and Bhubaneswar, with both leaders committed to a resolution. Ongoing talks between state officials were reviewed in the meeting, attended by key figures including Advocate General Patrambar Acharya, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, and Water Resources Department officials.
