The Maharashtra government has accepted the demands of tribal student protesters who have been on hunger strike in three cities, Tribal Development Minister Ashok Uike announced. The demands relate to the recruitment of Scheduled Tribes candidates in government services and improvements in facilities and conditions at residential schools for tribal children.

The announcement came as tribal students continued their protest over issues affecting their education, accommodation and welfare. Students have been seeking changes in policies governing tribal hostels and better facilities at institutions serving tribal children. The government’s decision to accept their demands is aimed at addressing the concerns raised by the protesters.

Among the issues raised by students were demands for the withdrawal of restrictive rules at tribal hostels, allowances linked to inflation and improvements in safety and infrastructure. The protesters have also sought insurance coverage and better living conditions in hostels. The protest at the Manjari tribal hostel for boys in Pune had continued for 16 days.

The agitation has involved students in three cities, with the protesters using hunger strikes to press the government to act on their demands. Minister Ashok Uike said the government had accepted all the demands of the students and appealed to them to call off the hunger strike.
