Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a leading Indian multinational, has clinched a significant contract worth between Rs 2,500-5,000 crore for the ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, also known as the bullet train corridor. The announcement, made on Monday, marks another milestone for L&T in transforming India’s transportation landscape.
The contract, awarded by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL), tasks L&T’s Transportation Infrastructure business with constructing 156 route kilometers (RKM) of high-speed ballastless track, designated as Package T1. This follows their earlier success in April 2022, when L&T secured Package T3, covering 116 km from south of Vadodara to Sabarmati depot, which is already progressing at a rapid pace.
With this latest win, L&T now shoulders responsibility for over 50% of the track-works for the MAHSR corridor, a flagship project aimed at revolutionizing travel between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The project employs cutting-edge Japanese Shinkansen J Slab Track Technology, designed to support speeds of up to 320 kmph. This technology ensures superior ride quality, extended service life, and enhanced maintainability, setting a new benchmark for high-speed rail in India.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train, a collaboration between India and Japan, is expected to drastically reduce travel time between the two cities, fostering economic growth and connectivity. L&T’s expertise in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects positions it as a key player in bringing this vision to life. The company, valued at USD 30 billion, operates across multiple sectors, including hi-tech manufacturing and services, with a global footprint.
This contract underscores L&T’s growing dominance in India’s infrastructure sector, particularly in high-stakes projects like the MAHSR. Industry experts view the order as a testament to L&T’s technical prowess and ability to deliver complex, large-scale projects on time. As work progresses, the bullet train project is poised to redefine modern transportation in India, with L&T at the forefront of this transformative journey.
