Amid grand celebrations and a surge of devotees, Lord Kallalagar made his ceremonial entry into the Vaigai River on a golden horse on Thursday, marking one of the most anticipated highlights of the annual Chithirai Festival. Lakhs of people gathered along the riverbanks in Madurai to witness the centuries-old ritual, which is steeped in religious and cultural significance.
The event commemorates the journey of Lord Kallalagar, a form of Lord Vishnu, from the Alagar Kovil to Madurai to attend the celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar. According to tradition, the deity arrives late, symbolically entering the Vaigai River before returning to the temple, a moment that draws massive crowds each year.
Devotees began assembling well before dawn, occupying vantage points along the river to catch a glimpse of the elaborately adorned deity mounted on the golden horse. The atmosphere was charged with devotion, with chants, music, and traditional performances adding to the festive fervour. Authorities had made extensive arrangements to manage the large turnout and ensure smooth conduct of the ritual.
