A horrific double murder has rocked Thiruvathukal, Kottayam, where Vijayakumar, 71, owner of the Indraprastham Auditorium, and his wife Meera, 65, were found brutally killed in their home on Tuesday. The gruesome discovery, made by their housemaid around 8:45 a.m., has left the community in disbelief.
The couple’s bodies, found in separate rooms—Vijayakumar in the hall and Meera in the bedroom—bore deep wounds, particularly to their faces, inflicted by a sharp weapon, likely a billhook recovered at the scene. Both victims were unclothed, and Vijayakumar’s death is attributed to a fatal head injury. The couple was discovered in pools of blood, with their faces disfigured, pointing to a violent attack.
Kottayam District Police Chief Shahul Hameed confirmed the case as a homicide, ruling out robbery due to no signs of forced entry or missing valuables. “Personal enmity is a key angle,” Hameed stated, with investigations focusing on a migrant worker previously employed by the couple. The suspect, dismissed months ago over a dispute involving phone theft, is in custody for questioning. Locals noted prior tensions following the worker’s termination.

The missing hard disk from the home’s CCTV system has added a layer of mystery, prompting police to collect footage from nearby areas. Vijayakumar, a prominent industrialist, also owned the Indraprastham Tourist Home and other businesses. The couple lived alone, their son having died in 2018 under tragic circumstances, with their daughter residing abroad.
Minister V N Vasavan, a Kottayam native, called the killings “gruesome” and assured a thorough probe. As police intensify their investigation, the town mourns the loss of a respected figure, grappling with the brutality of this chilling crime.
