Starting Monday, August 25, 2025, Kolkata Metro will increase its weekday services on the Blue Line, running between Dakshineswar and Sahid Khudiram, to 284 trains per day, up from the current 262, according to a Metro Railway spokesperson. This enhancement, comprising 142 trains in each direction (up and down), aims to address growing commuter demand on the city’s oldest Metro route, which connects Kolkata’s northern and southern fringes.
The spokesperson confirmed that the increased services will operate only on weekdays, with no changes to the existing schedule on Saturdays and Sundays. The Blue Line, a critical artery for daily commuters, spans approximately 31 kilometers and includes 24 stations, serving key areas like Dum Dum, Shyambazar, Esplanade, and New Garia. In 2024, the line handled an average daily ridership of over 6.5 lakh passengers, with peak-hour trains often running at full capacity.
The decision follows feedback from commuters about overcrowding during rush hours, particularly on weekday mornings and evenings. Metro authorities have also introduced measures like real-time train tracking via the Kolkata Metro app to improve passenger experience. Social media posts on X reflected positive reactions, with users praising the move but urging similar upgrades for other lines, such as the Green Line, which connects Howrah and Salt Lake.
