Former BJP MP Kirron Kher has been issued a notice by the Chandigarh Assistant Controller (Finance & Accounts) Rents office, demanding Rs 12.76 lakh in unpaid licence fees and penalties for a government-allotted house at T-6/23, Sector 7, where she resided during her tenure as Chandigarh’s MP from 2014 to 2024. The notice, dated June 24, 2025, warns of an additional 12% annual interest if the amount remains unpaid.
The dues include a licence fee of Rs 5,725 from July 2023 to October 5, 2024, a 100% penalty of Rs 3.64 lakh for unauthorized occupation from October 6, 2024, to January 5, 2025, and a 200% penalty of Rs 8.20 lakh from January 6 to April 12, 2025, the official vacate date. Additional charges include Rs 26,106 in interest and Rs 59,680 in miscellaneous fees. Kher must pay via demand draft or bank transfer.
Local Congress president Harmohinder Singh Lucky urged the administration to consider waiving penalties due to Kher’s health issues, including her 2021 multiple myeloma diagnosis, while residents criticized inconsistent enforcement compared to stricter actions against other defaulters. Kher has not publicly responded.
