Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) in Thrissur is under public scrutiny after the arrest of animal activist Antony Abhijith for feeding stray dogs on campus. Antony, known for rescuing and rehabilitating abandoned and injured animals, was taken into custody when security personnel reported the incident to local police.
Antony clarified that he was on campus to adopt a rescued dog and fed a few strays in the process. He shared a video on social media showing his arrest, stating that while the authorities filed a complaint against him, no law prohibits feeding stray dogs. He has since been observing a fast outside the university in protest.
The controversy stems from a February 6, 2026, circular issued by the university following Supreme Court guidelines regulating stray dog feeding. The circular prescribes fines of Rs 1,000 for petting and Rs 2,000 for feeding strays within campus premises, and mandates reporting violators to the Dean with photographic evidence.

Antony highlighted the irony of such rules in a veterinary institution, noting that posters warning against feeding strays were displayed within the hospital premises. He filed an RTI to confirm that these measures were formalized during a college hostel committee meeting in February 2025.
The activist has received widespread support from animal lovers and social media followers, who argue that the university’s approach contradicts its mandate to promote animal welfare. Antony expressed disbelief that a government veterinary university would adopt policies that he considers neglectful and harsh.
Critics say the incident raises broader questions about institutional responsibility and ethical treatment of animals. While students reportedly oppose the ban, the university has not revised its policy, highlighting ongoing tension between administrative rules and public sentiment on animal care.
